STEM CAMP - Wallace State Community College

What is STEM Camp?
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. What can you do with all of the SCIENCE and MATH stuff you have been learning forever? Find out at CARCAM STEM Camp!

STEM Camp is 10 days of action packed, hands-on, FUN learning.

Industry representatives will speak about their positions in the hi-tech world of automotive manufacturing. Learn about career opportunities at nearby suppliers as well as manufacturers such as Honda, Mercedes, Toyota, Hyundai, and International Diesel. Tour Topre, Rehau, and one of Alabama’s four assembly plants. You’ll be able to see manufacturing robots, a 25,000 ton press, and other hi-tech equipment in action as it is used to create an automobile.

The instructors at Wallace State Community College will guide you through the creation of your own robot. This robot can artificially hear, see, feel, and obey your every command. At the end of the camp, you will participate in a competition against your classmates to see which robot is best.

Ideal STEM Camp Candidates
Have you ever taken something apart to see how it works? STEM Camp may be for you! STEM Camp candidates should enjoy hands-on learning. Career aspirations should be in a hi-tech field such as electronics, machining, or robotics. To excel in a high tech field, candidates should be interested in intermediate mathematics and science.

What does it Cost?
Wallace State Community College will pay you to attend! The National Science Foundation has awarded Wallace and four other CARCAM colleges a grant which pays for the STEM camp. Participants who complete the camp will receive $100 and daily mileage reimbursement from home to the camp.

Requirements
1. Applicants must be entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in fall of 2008.

2. Return completed STEM Camp appication (pdf), transcript (highlight algebra grade on transcript), medical release form, and transportation release form to Joe Hendrix, Wallace State Community College, Post Office Box 2000, Hanceville, AL 35077. Application materials must be received by 4:00 p.m. on May 6, 2008.

3. Must have a “C” or better in algebra. If applicant has not taken algebra, must have a “C” or better in the math class taken during the 2007-2008 school year.

4. Transcripts must be sent with application. (Highlight Algebra grade on transcript)

5. Must be recommended by a counselor or math/science teacher.

Selection Process
On May 23, students will be notified if they are selected as a STEM Camp Participant. There will be 25 students selected for the camp.

Date/Time
STEM Camp will be held June 16-20 and 23-27 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
